After assuring India that it would devolve more powers to the Provincial Councils (PC), the government is attempting to wrest control of some of the powers vested with the Councils through the constitution, claimed Central Provincial Councillor Sanjeewa Kaviratne.
This government moves are to take over especially the Police and Land powers vested with the Provincial Councils through the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka, he added.
The Opposition parties along with the United National Party (UNP) in the Central Provincial Council have obtained a debate on the issue during a special session on September 20, said former UNP Deputy Minister P.B. Kaviratne’s son Sanjeewa.
Further, the UNP and other parties in PCs island-wide are to meet soon to discuss these crucial issues and mount campaigns against it and also raise awareness among the masses, Mr. Kaviratne said.
