IDPs reduced to 25,260

The total number of Internally Displaced Persons remaining in welfare centres in Vavuniya, Mannar and Trincomalee has reduced to 25, 260 as at 14. 09. 2010, from over 280,000 IDPs who escaped from the LTTE in the height of battle against terrorism last year.
Due to the government’s speedy demining and resettlement
programme the government has resettled 203, 455 IDPs belonging to 62, 611
families in their places of origin, according to the Ministry of Resettlement.
The IDPs who were in the relief villages in Vavuniya, Mannar and Trincomalee
(Pulmoddai) have been resettled in areas including Kandy, Polonnaruwa,
Puttalam, Kegalle, Badulla, Ampara, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Vavuniya, Mannar,
Jaffna, Mullativu and Kilinochchi.
Meanwhile 27, 619 of IDPs have been released from the welfare centers on various medical and social grounds. Thus, the total of returned and released IDPs from Vavuniya, Mannar and Trincomalee Districts is 232,503.
The total number of IDPs released from the Jaffna welfare centres to their
places of origin is 10, 252. Accordingly, a total of 242,755 IDPs have been
resettled from Vavuniya, Mannar, Trincomalee and Jaffna Districts.
The government has ensured livelihood assistance to resettled IDPs, the Policy
Research & Information Unit of the Presidential Secretariat said.
