VIDEO: UNP is Opposition for namesake, claims JVP

The United National party (UNP) is not the actual Opposition now. It is acting according to government dictates and even its members accept the fact. It is the ‘official’ Opposition within Parliament but not outside, said Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary Tilvin Silva.
The government is in the process of weakening and destroying the Opposition. It uses several methods. One is to buy the weak Opposition members by offering huge sums of money and perks. The other is to intimidate them by trumped up charges and either take them to courts or lock them up, said Tilvin Silva.
Not only to Sarath Fonseka, this happened even to several JVP/DNA members who took part in a protest in Galle. Many JVP members were arrested on false charges, he claimed.
However, the JVP General Secretary said that no one could scare them into submission.
Addressing the media at the JVP headquarters in Pelawatte, Battaramulla, Mr. Silva said that before the UNP critised others, it should look inwards and analyse what its members and leadership say at public rallies and the way they behave within the party.
“They should first look into what the UNP members and its leader said about Sarath Fonseka and what they have done,” added Tilvin Silva.
When reference is made to the Opposition, as a habit all look up to the UNP. But the UNP is now not the real Opposition. That is only in Parliament. The real Opposition outside the Parliament is some other party, claimed Tilvin.
“Even during the passage of the 18th Amendment, the UNP was protesting outside. The members were not even inside Parliament to vote against. We did the needful. Who created the public opinion against the amendments? Was it the UNP? It was the JVP that managed to raise the people’s voice against the government moves,” Tilvin Silva told the media.
The JVP is responsible to the masses. Those against the current political trend will gather round the party and create the strong opposition that is urgently needed at the moment, vowed Tilvin Silva.
