A rock slide has occurred on the Lavendon range near Kotmale early this morning due to incessant rains, said Kotmale Divisional Secretary Menake Herath. Initially it had not caused any traffic disruption but had developed by afternoon.

Disaster Coordinating Officer Eranda Hemaratne had inspected the area and recommended the evacuation of eight families as a precautionary measure. They are being provided shelter and cooked meals, he said.

Several earth slides had occurred in some areas from dawn today. One was at a site along the Kandy-Nuwara Eliya road. Though there was nor disruption to traffic, police have warned motorists to be cautious while proceeding along hilly regions.
