3,500 landslide prone areas in Sri Lanka

Some 3,500 landslide prone areas have been identified in Sri Lanka, the Landslide Research and Risk Management Division (LRRM) says. 

Director of LRRM R.M.S. Bandara told Ada Derana that the researches have identified ten landslide prone districts of Kalutara, Galle, Hambantota, Nuwara Eliya, Matale, Kandy, Kegalle, Ratnapura, Matara and Badulla.

“At the moment, our teams inspect the vulnerable areas. Further instructions will be provided accordingly,” he said.

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has also issued landslide warning for Bandarawela, Ella, Haldumulla divisional secretariat divisions in Badull districts.

Senior Scientist at the LRRM, Dr. H.A.G. Jayatissa, said that the people living in these areas need to give special attention on all mountain areas, man-made cut slopes, and roads within the district.
