Court bans protests in Jaffna Town

May 23, 2015   07:15 am

The Jaffna Magistrate Court has issued a stay order banning all types of protests in Jaffna Town, Police Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

The order has been issued on Northern Provincial Council member Ananthi Sasidharan, Chairman of Janatha Balaya Organisation T. Kumaravelu and the chairman of another organization prohibiting them from organizing any protests in Jaffna and breaking the peace.

The court also instructs police to arrest any individual who violates this stay order.

A recent incident of rape and murder of an 18-year-old school girl in Punkudithivu had triggered violence on Wednesday in Jaffna, when people who had gathered outside the court complex went on rampage.

As many as 130 persons were arrested by the police for rioting. Ten police officers including Superintendent of Police of Jaffna have been transferred with immediate effect.
