President accepts Modi’s invitation for international Buddhist event

President Maithripala Sirisena will be attending an international Buddhist event in India in mid May at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the New Indian Express reported.

During the two-day visit to India beginning on May 13, Sirisena will be holding talks with Modi, either at Ujjain or New Delhi.

“India is very keen that Lanka signs the proposed Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement (ETCA). Talks on the ETCA are due to begin in the next few months. To assuage fears among Lankans that they might be economically overwhelmed by the Big Brother across the Palk Strait, the Lankan government wants the ETCA to be “asymmetrical” and tilted in favor of the weaker party, namely, Lanka. India has already assured its accommodativeness in this regard,” the article added.
