Former Minister G.L. Peiris says that the extent of the “betrayal” committed by the Sri Lankan government by co-sponsoring the resolution adopted at the UN Human Rights Council is now clear from the annual report of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein.
He claimed that report, which was submitted to the council session yesterday, highlighted the need to subject the country’s armed forces and police to strict reforms.
Addressing a ‘Joint Opposition’ press conference today, Peiris alleged that the High Commissioner has pressed the government to implement these reforms immediately. He stated that the root cause for this pressure is the government supporting the resolution adopted at the 30thsession of the UNHRC.
UPFA MP Dullas Alahapperuma, also addressing the media briefing, stated that the ‘Joint Opposition’ has decided to launch a national movement against the government oppressive and fraudulent actions.
“This is not a party or an organization,” he said, adding that the national movement will kick off on July 28 in Kandy and that it will reach Colombo as a massive protest march on August 01.
