There will be no space for human rights if a society lacks faith in religion, Bishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith says.

The observation was made while he was speaking at a welcome ceremony for Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thera at the Sambodhi Vihara this afternoon.

He also went on to say a country cannot abandon its cultural habits amid pressure from international community and human rights situation.

The Bishop pointed out that any nation would not be obliged to bow down to rules of the international community with respect of human rights situation if all have a faith in religion and respect human rights.

He also pointed out that the right status and respect deserved for Buddhism should remain intact in the constitution.
