An investigation is underway with respect of the allegation made in Australian media regarding the involvement of an individual in a bribery scandal while he was serving as a member of the President’s former Ministry in 2009.
Cabinet Spokesman Dr Rajitha Senaratne told reporters in Colombo that the President has instructed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the matter without any delay.
“This is yet another allegation, we still don’t know whether this report is accurate or not,” he added.
President Maithripala Sirisena last week said that he has no connection whatsoever to such an incident and that he instructed the Attorney-General to investigate into the matter. A statement issued by the President’s Media Division also stated “The President stated that he has no connection whatsoever in such an incident,” it said.
The President also emphasized that during his political career, he had never indulged in any form of corruption or malpractice or encouraged or involved in any such activity.
