Navy arrests 21 local fishermen engaged in illegal fishing

Sri Lanka Navy personnel have arrested 21 local fishermen for engaging in illegal fishing activities using unauthorized nets in the seas off Silawathurai.

Naval personnel attached to SLNS Therapuththa located in Silawathurai in the North Western Naval Command made the arrests on Thursday and Friday (21) while 10 dinghies, 5 monofilament nets and 3 GPS units were also taken into naval custody. 

The apprehended persons and belongings were handed over to Mannar Assistant Directorate of Fisheries for further investigations, according to the SLN media unit.

Further, naval personnel attached to SLNS Parakumba located in Sampur and belonging to the Eastern Naval Command, apprehended a 100 m long monofilament fishing net in the general area of Kadakarachchenai yesterday (21). 

The apprehended fishing net was handed over to Muththur Fisheries Inspector, the navy said.
