In an exclusive interview with Ada Derana, the Chairman of the South Asian Institute of Technology (SAITM), Dr. Neville Fernando stated that he is willing to transfer ownership of the Hospital and the Institute if the government is willing to pay off the institute’s debt.
He went onto say that the if enrollment of candidates was suspended, then the institute would not be able to pay off its monthly expenses, such as the monthly expenses on wages for staff which accounts to Rs. 50 million.
Dr. Fernando added that a clear judgment to recognize the students has been made, and the Sri Lankan Medical Council (SLMC) has been requested to provide the students with their provisional registration.
“If they (SLMC) don’t recognize the students (as suitable candidates for provisional registration) then they (SLMC) will be taken to courts, or if contempt of courts, be jailed for two years” he said.
