April 26, 2017   02:30 pm

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi are currently having bilateral discussions in New Delhi.

Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday called upon visiting Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as well.

India and Sri Lanka also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to achieve equal benefits to both countries through economic investment and development cooperation.

Sri Lanka’s Cabinet approval has also been granted for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Sri Lanka on cooperation in economic projects. The Cabinet has noted that separate Cabinet Memorandums will be presented on joint ventures discussing with relevant parties by the relevant ministries.

“Visit of a special partner. Sri Lankan PM Wickremesinghe arrives in Delhi on 25 April, meets EAM Sushma Swaraj today (Wednesday),” Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesman Gopal Baglay tweeted.

The Sri Lankan Prime Minister is visiting India from 25-29 April, ahead of Modi’s scheduled visit to the island nation in May for the Vesak Day celebrations.

During the visit, both the countries will discuss the dispute over fishing activities in the Palk Bay and cooperation in the shipping and port sector.

Wickremesinghe in 2016 was on a three-day official visit to India to attend the opening plenary of the India Economic Summit.
