There is no danger of the Meethotamulla garbage heap exploding, Minister of Megapolis and Western Development, Patali Champika Ranawaka says.

According to the Minister, numerous societies have been publicizing inaccurate information indicating the possible explosion of the garbage heap owing to trapped Methane gas, and further erosion of the heap.

The Minister affirmed that there was no such risk of an explosion and urged the population not to spread baseless rumours.

Ranawaka stated this at a press conference held in order to brief the media about the programmes implemented to address the Meethotamulla incident.

The press conference revealed that 3 committees had been appointed to address the situation, and that a programme comprising 12 stages had been implemented with the help of the Building Research Institute, Survey Department, Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, Ministry of Disaster Management, Central Engineering Institution and Sri Lanka Army.
