The Cabinet of Ministers this week approved a proposal to build a hybrid energy park in the Poonaryn area, the Government Information Department said.

The hybrid energy park will reportedly consist of 240 Mw of wind power plants and 800 MW of solar power plants.

The proposal was submitted by the Minister of Power and Renewable Energy.

According to the government’s policy to add a considerable amount of electricity to the national grid through renewable energy sources, the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority has recognized the northern area of the country as a suitable area to build these power plants.

The project will reportedly be implemented in three stages.
