Water supply to several areas has been interrupted due to floods and landslides.
The Water Supply and Drainage Board (WSDB) stated that Colombo was being supplied with water at a low pressure.
Chairman of the WSDB. K. A. Ansar revealed that several water distributing pipes had been destroyed by the floods in Labugama, and added that water was therefore being diverted through alternative pipe lines temporarily.
The water supply to Southern province is also reported to be failing.
Chairman K. A. Ansar also stated that 3 out of the 4 water supply schemes of Matara had been flooded and rendered completely inactive, and that all supply of water was therefore being conducted from the only standing supply scheme.
Meanwhile, doctors warn that the spread of food and water-borne diseases would be rising rapidly owing to the flood conditions, and therefore advises the public to be cautious about the water they drink.
Accordingly, Dr. Waruna Gunathilaka, Visiting Physician attached to the National Hospital in Colombo advised the public to drink ONLY boiled water.
He added that flood victims seeking refuge in temporary camps must attempt to drink bottled water as much as possible.
