CMC to stop garbage disposal in Meethotamulla

June 23, 2017   03:54 pm

The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has informed the Supreme Court that no garbage will be disposed at the Meethotamulla garbage site henceforth.

The Counsel appearing on behalf of the CMC informed the Court of the decision during the fundamental rights petition hearing today (23).

The petition was filed by a group of residents in the region, seeking a court order banning the dumping of waste in Meethotamulla.

The Counsel also informed the Court that an alternative course of action would be implemented for garbage disposal.

Meanwhile, the Counsels representing the petitioners stated that over 40 lives were lost as a result of the Meethotamulla garbage heap’s recent collapse, and added that relief must therefore be provided to the residents after reviewing the petition.

Accordingly, the Supreme Court has scheduled the fundamental rights petition hearing for September 27, Ada Derana court correspondent said.
