Ryan Jayalath remanded

The Convener of the Medical Faculty Students’ Action Committee, Ryan Jayalath, has been remanded until August 23.
The university student union leader had surrendered to the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court this morning (18), through a lawyer.
Jayalath is a suspect in the incident of protesting university students storming the health ministry and damaging public property on June 21.
A warrant was issued for his arrest, as well as 4 other members of the Medical Faculty Students Action Committee, for not appearing in court for a hearing on August 10.
The Fort Magistrate’s Court had previously issued arrest warrants for Ryan Jayalath and 4 other members for disturbing the peace. The 5 students are to be tried for conducting protests in a disruptive manner to the public.
