4 nabbed at BIA for attempting to smuggle gold in rectum

Four passengers have been apprehended by Airport Customs at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) early in the morning of today (21), for attempting to smuggle several pieces of gold in their rectums.

The gold, the form of three gold biscuits and 6 row gold pieces, was found to weigh 387.81g and estimated to be valued at Rs. 2,132,955.

The passengers, one Indian national and three Sri Lankan nationals, were aged between 20 and 38, Customs reported.

Two had been bound to Coimbatore aboard the flight UL 193, whereas one had been bound to Trich aboard the flight UL 134. and the other to Madurei aboard the flight UL 133, when they were apprehended by Customs staff at the Departure terminal.

The four had been released by the Deputy Director of Customs, G. G. Premasiri, following an inquiry and a penalty of Rs. 10,000.

The smuggled gold had also been taken into Customs custody.

The case had been detected by G. M. Rathnayake, Superintendent of Customs; W. M. S. Silva, G. D. C.  Jayasooriya, N. W. A. M. Jayawardane, M. A. R. Cooray and S. M. C. S. Samarakoon, Assistant Superintendents of Customs.
