Youth held over attempt to smuggle gold jewellery

UPDATE (8.35 am): The suspects had been released on a penalty of Rs. 100,000 by Deputy Director of Customs, Duminda Weerakkodi, in the morning today (22). The smuggled jewellery had also been taken into Customs custody.
A 27-year-old passenger has been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) for attempting to smuggle gold jewellery worth over Rs 1.2 million into the country, concealed in his luggage.
The suspect had arrived from Saudi Arabia by flight SV 780 at 4.00pm on Monday (21) and was intercepted by BIA Customs (Arrivals).
They discovered 255grms of gold jewellery valued at Rs. 1,275,400 inside his luggage among the used clothing and some other personal goods, Sri Lanka Customs spokesman Sunil Jayarathne said.
Investigations are being carried out under the supervision of a Deputy Director of Customs, he said.
