Two women nabbed with gold jewellery worth Rs 40m at BIA

Customs officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake arrested 2 Sri Lankan women while attempting to smuggle gold jewellery worth around Rs 40 million into the country.
The suspects had arrived from Dubai this morning when they were intercepted by officers of Customs Narcotic unit of the BIA Customs.
They discovered gold jewellery weighing 7.7 kilograms and worth around Rs 40 million concealed in a girdle having packed in 8 packets and worn under their pants.
The suspects, aged 41 and 49, had arrived from Dubai by UL 226 on at 5.00am today arrested by officers of Customs Narcotic unit of the Customs. They are residents of Colombo while one of them is a Real Estate Business Consultant.
The detection was made based on the intelligence gathered by the Customs Narcotic control Unit, according to the spokesman.
Further investigations are being carried out with regard to the suspects, he said.

The 7.7kgs of Gold jewelry that was confiscated earlier today was forfeited while the suspects were released after being fined Rs.2.5 million after a customs inquiry that was conducted by the Deputy Director of Customs P.J.B.Basnayake.
