Three persons have been killed in a suicide bombing that took place in a security checkpoint during a cricket match in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul yesterday (13).
A cricket tournament was being held at Kabul International Cricket Stadium at the time of the explosion, where Sanath Jayasooriya, Farveez Maharoof, Ashan Priyanjan and match referee Graem Labroo participated.
However, the players have been on a break and not on the pitch at the time of the explosion, reports confirmed.
Sanath Jayasuriya and Farveez Maharoof arrived in Sri Lanka today morning (14th) concluding the tournament, while Ashan Priyanjana and Graem Labrooy are still in the tournament.
The blast killed two civilians and a police officer and left 12 people injured, including two children. Two police officers were also among the wounded.
The bomber is believed to have struck after being stopped at the checkpoint while walking towards the stadium.
No one has claimed to be behind the bombing as yet, but both the Taliban and Islamic State have carried out previous similar attacks.
A special investigation has been commenced by the Afghan security into the incident and the security of the players has been reinforced, it is reported.
