A 10th grade student who received an unjustly harsh punishment from her school Principal and disciplinary committee, for vomiting during school hours is currently receiving treatment at the Dambulla hospital following severe psychological trauma.

The female student who was in attendance at a government school at Datugama in Kekirawa was expelled from school following a disciplinary inquiry conducted by the school principal and disciplinary committee.

It has been reported that the female student was summoned before the principal after a group of students lodged a complaint with school administrators stating that the girl was pregnant.

Prior to her expulsion, the student had arrived at school after not eating breakfast resulting in a gastric reflux. This occurrence compelled a group of her peers to misinform the Principal stating that she was vomiting as a result of a secret pregnancy.

Following the complaint the school Principal had promptly summoned the parents of the child and handed them with an expulsion letter stating that the school will not tolerate their students being pregnant.

The parents of the student admitted her at the Dambulla hospital to conduct a pregnancy test and informed the medical officials of their daughters’ plight. Following several tests the doctors confirmed that the student had not had any sexual activity and was not pregnant.

Director of Medical Services for the Dambulla hospital Dr. Gamini Senanayake stated that both government medical specialists and Gynecologists confirm that the female student had not been sexually harmed in any way that the school Principal described to her parents.

Speaking to Ada Derana correspondents, the parents of the 15-year old girl stated that her daughter was victimized by a group of jealous peers who were envious of her academic and extra-curricular achievements.

Following the incident Ada Derana reporters contacted the Principal of the Madatugama Sri Rewatha College Mrs.S.K. Godakanda who stated that the school disciplinary committee came to this harsh conclusion due to the unsettled and uncouth disciplinary history of the student in question. She further stated that their decision was further supported by the fact that the student herself had confided in two of her friends confirming her pregnancy.

The 15-year old girl who underwent severe emotional and psychological trauma is currently receiving treatment at the Dambulla hospital. Hospital sources confirm that women’s and children’s Rights groups were informed of the incident.
