Fishing community points fingers at India over dumping of medical waste

Deputy Director of the Jaffna Fisheries Inspection Office (FIO) S.Shivakaran stated that a large volume of medical waste with Indian lettering was discovered near the northern coastline of Sri Lanka.
He stated that a host of local fishermen came across the medical waste that was floating off coasts of Thondamanaru, Akkarai and Vallai.
Officials of the FIO recovered several containers of garbage that contained a large amount of medical waste including glass vials, syringes and medicinal drugs harmful to the aquatic ecology of the area.
It has been reported that the northern fishing community are of the belief that the large volume of waste was dumped into the ocean by Indian sailors.
