General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Nizam Kariapper stated that the Muslim Congress will contest the upcoming local government elections in the northern and eastern regions of the country as an independent political party.

The Muslim Congress had previously decided to contest the LG polls together with the UNP for all other regions of Sri Lanka.

Nizam Kariapper further stated that the executive council of the Muslim Congress will convene to decide on whether the party will break away completely from the United National Front.
