General Amnesty Period for Army deserters extended

The General Amnesty period granted for Army personnel Absent Without Leave (AWOL) is due to expire within a period of two days.

The Army headquarters said that, earlier, the General Amnesty period was expected to end on Wednesday (November 15).

However, it was extended until November 22, 2017 in response to numerous requests made to the Army Headquarters, it is reported.

During this period a total of 9601 Army deserters have reached respective Regimental Centers expecting legal discharge, Army Media Spokesperson Major GeneraL Roshan Seneviratne said.

Accordingly, law enforcing authorities have been advised to launch island-wide operation to nab the reminder of those AWOL upon the expiry of the final day of the extended Amnesty (November 22).

Provision of employment or harbor any Army absentee or deserter amounts to breach of exiting law in the country and is an offence punishable in Court as per section 133 of the Penal Code.

The General Amnesty wad declared under the directions of the President and the Ministry of Defense on October 23, 2017.
