Railway trade unions expect a favourable response from the cabinet

Heads of the Railway Trade Unions that are currently on strike stated that they hope that the cabinet will provide a favourable response to the demands made by them that includes a revision of their current remuneration schemes.
Secretary of the Railway Drivers Association Indika Dodangoda stated that the railway strike will continue until the government provides a resolution that is acceptable.
Meanwhile it has been reported that members of seven railway trade unions have returned to work despite opposition from union heads.
Accordingly the Railway telecommunication operators union, Railroad and railway crossing operators union, Railroad and Factory operators union, Railroad development union, Engine drivers’ union, Railway Locomotive and Technical union and the National Engineering union have reported back for duty.
The Railway Department took steps to operate 40 additional trains to facilitate the needs of the students facing the GCE Ordinary Examination today. It has however been stated that the Department of Railways has incurred a loss of 12-14 million as a result of the strike action.
