Parliament approves civil members to Constitutional Council

Parliament has approved non-parliamentary members to the Constitutional Council.

Accordingly, following members have been appointed to the council:

Dr. Jayantha Dhanapala - Senior Special Advisor on Foreign Relations to President

Ahamed Javed Yusuf – Former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Saudi Arabia

Naganathan Selvakumaran – Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Law, University of Colombo


Accordingly, the appointing of new members to the Constitutional Council is now complete while the council will meet for the first time tomorrow (12) to name a new Chief Justice.

The President, Prime Minister and Opposition Leader are the permanent members of the council while Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe was appointed as the representative of the President.

Minister Thalatha Athukorala is the representative of the Prime Minister while MP Chamal Rajapaksa has been appointed as the representative of the Opposition Leader.

JVP MP Bimal Ratnayake has been appointed as the representative of the remainer of MPs.
