Two held with gold jewellery worth over Rs.14 million at BIA

Two passengers who are holders of foreign passports have been apprehended today on separate detections at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake for attempting smuggle gold jewellery worth over Rs 14 million in total, into the country.
Sri Lanka Customs said that a 30-year-old Australian passport holder who arrived from Singapore at 01.30pm today (16) was apprehended by the officers of Customs Narcotic Control Unit at the Green Channel of arrival area with 4 packages of gold jewellery weighing 1,206.42 grams and valued at Rs 6,635,310.
Meanwhile a 60-year-old Norwegian passport holder who also arrived from Singapore at 05.00pm today was apprehended by the Customs Officials on duty at the Green Channel of the arrival lounge with gold jewellery weighing 1,390.66 grams.
The jewellery valued at approximately Rs 7,648,630 had been concealed in a liquor carton.
Sri Lanka Customs is conducting further investigations into the smuggling attempts.
