The Constitutional Council is scheduled to assemble this Thursday, the Speaker’s Office announced.

Following the appointment of its new members, the Constitutional Council is assembling for the second time this Thursday, presided by the Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya.

Accordingly, the council will appoint the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal judges at the upcoming meeting.

Meanwhile, the official term of the National Police Commission (NPC) also expired on October 14, hence the Constitutional Council is also slated to appoint new members for the commission.

However, it was reported that new members for the NPC will not be appointed at this meeting.

According to the 19th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka, the current members of the NPC are allowed to be in office until the new members are appointed to the commission.
