If Ranil resigns, Sajith should become UNP leader – Marikkar

Former MP S. M. Marikkar states that the UNP has decided to contest at the general election as a broad front and that the idea of a new leadership has come up.

He mentioned this, speaking at a media briefing held at the Temple Trees, today (11).

Marikkar says that the UNP has two options; either to contest at the election or to go to the Supreme Court to resolve these issues.

The recent events have motivated the UNP supporters who had been disappointed earlier, said the former MP.

Responding to a question posed by a journalist, he said that the public believes that all forces should be combined to win the election as a broad front and also that new leaders should come up.

He added that Ranil Wickremesinghe had been the leader for 24 years and that now the public expects a change. To win, they must listen to the voice of the public, he pointed out.

According to the public, if Ranil Wickremesinghe resigns from the leadership of the United National Party (UNP), Sajith Premadasa should become the next leader, Marikkar stated.
