Minister Champika Ranawaka says that international terrorism today runs on the internet through social media websites such as Facebook.
“We need new laws. We need to think about these things anew,” he said speaking during an event in Hambantota.
He stated that formulating new laws for the purpose of eradicating terrorism in the country should be first and foremost task of the Parliament next.
He also said that everyone should dedicate themselves to this task putting aside political and other differences.
The minister said that what needs to be done when Parliament convenes next week is to bring fresh laws to curb terrorism, extremism, religious fanaticism and educational institutions that are unsuitable to the country.
He said that although certain organisations and groups have been banned and some laws have been introduced under emergency laws, they are only valid while emergency laws are in effect.
He said new laws are needed for ensuring long-standing peace in the country and that it is the duty of the Parliament.
