Covid-19 cases from Minuwangoda-Peliyagoda cluster near 5,000 mark

Sri Lanka registered 541 positive cases of Covid-19 yesterday alone, recording the third-highest daily cases count.

The Department of Government Information said 42 of yesterday’s coronavirus infections were identified as Minuwangoda apparel factory staffers and their contacts who are currently at quarantine centres.

The remaining 499 patients are reportedly close contacts of the virus-infection individuals linked to the Minuwangoda and Peliyagoda cluster.

Thereby, the overall number of infections reported from the cluster hiked to 4,941, the state information bureau revealed. Out of this total 1,041 are staff members of the Minuwangoda apparel factory and the rest of the 3,900 are their contacts.

The new development has total infections confirmed thus far in the country soared to 8,413, increasing the gross number of active cases under medical care to 4,464.

Covid-19 recoveries meanwhile reached 3,933 as 130 more patients infected with the virus were discharged from hospitals upon returning to health.

Sri Lanka witnessed the highest daily count of Covid-19 cases on the 23rd of October with a record total of 866 fresh positive cases. The second-highest was recorded on the 6th of October with 739 infections.

In the meantime, health authorities have carried out 7,682 PCR tests yesterday, bringing the total number of tests conducted in the country to 458,518.
