A group of nine Sri Lankans have been detained by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and officers of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) after attempting to fraudulently leave the island.
They were detained at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) after attempting to depart to Malaysia on tourist visas while expecting employment.
The group has been handed over to the Investigation Division of the SLBFE for further investigations.
Among the detained suspects are four women and two men.
Upon checking the documents of a group of 14 Sri Lankans who were scheduled to board a flight to Malaysia, the officers found out that nine of them were attempting to fly out on tourist visas with the intention of getting job opportunities there.
This fraudulent activity was uncovered after the officers of the CID and the SLBFE interrogated these nine individuals at length.
Further investigations are underway to apprehend those who are involved in this human trafficking racket.
