Galle - England secured victory on Friday in the first Test against Sri Lanka, winning by 211 runs at Galle and giving the visitors their first away Test success in 13 games.

The hosts, chasing a notional 462 victory, were all out for 250 on day four, with Moeen Ali taking four wickets and Jack Leach three.

Sri Lanka failed to give the retiring Rangana Herath a winning farewell but the cricketer made sure that England earned the final wicket to seal the last game of his career.

The visitors, against all the expectations, bossed the game from the word go and eventually won it by 211 runs on the fourth day of the opening Test match.

Joe Root and his batch of 2018 became the first English side to register a win in Galle. Nasser Hussain’s men lost by an innings in 2001 while the last time England played there, in 2012, Herath bagged 12 to spin them out of the contest.
