Sri Lanka to face no ICC sanctions following post-match no show

Sri Lanka Cricket has confirmed that they will not face any sanctions from the ICC after they failed to turn up for their post-match press conference against Australia.

The 1996 champions refused to conduct a compulsory post-match media conference following their 87-run World Cup defeat to Aaron Finch’s side at The Oval on Saturday.

Reports had suggested that they were due to be fined for their actions, but a statement released today by themselves has confirmed they will face no such punishment.

A statement read: “Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce that, contrary to various media reports, there won’t be any sanctions imposed on the Sri Lanka team by the ICC, over its non-participation in the post-match media conference on Saturday, June 15, following the World Cup game played against Australia.

“Sri Lanka Cricket discussed the ‘Saturday’s Incident’ with the ICC and assured that a similar situation will not occur going forward in the tournament.

“The SLC also advised the team management to comply with the obligations, a participating team has to adhere during the ICC Cricket World Cup.”

The news comes a few days after Sri Lanka team manager Ashantha de Mel claimed some of the hotels the team have stayed at have lacked a swimming pool and the bus they had travelled around the UK on was too cramped.

De Mel was also dissatisified with the pitch preparation at The Oval, hinting that it was less friendly to batsmen than the one that was prepared for India’s win over Australia over a week ago.

The ICC however refuted these claims and stated that they were content with the pitches being produced at the World Cup.
