Sri Lanka’s women stunned defending champions England with a six off the final ball to seal a shock one-wicket win in their opening World Cup group match in Mumbai.
Dilani Surangika struck a magnificent maximum off the final ball to see Sri Lanka to 244 for nine off their 50 overs, surpassing England’s 238 for eight in dramatic fashion.
Jenny Gunn had made 52 as England recovered from 29-3 to post 238-8, scoring 94 off the last 10 overs.
But Sri Lanka’s openers put on 103 to lay the platform for a famous victory.
The defeat represents a big setback for Charlotte Edwards’s side as they began their World Cup group A campaign at the Brabourne Stadium.
England next take on India on Sunday, with another crucial group match against West Indies to follow on Tuesday.
