Sri Lanka off spinner Dilruwan Perera took a career-best 5-69 to help dismiss South Africa for 282 in its first innings and give his team a 139-run lead in the second test on Saturday.
Hashim Amla finished unbeaten on 139 — his 22nd test century — but a lack of support from teammates meant conceding a big first innings lead to Sri Lanka.
Amla’s patient innings took more than eight hours with 382 deliveries.
Perara’s figures surpassed his previous best of 5-109 against Bangladesh earlier this year. Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath complimented him well with 4-71.
