There are some software programs that become so well-known that their names enter the English language as verbs. One of the best known is Adobe Photoshop, the graphics and video editing application that turns 30.

A picture that has been altered from the original is now known as having photoshopped.

Photoshop was awarded an Oscar in 2019, marking the evolution of one of the truly iconic programs that has stood the test of time. It was used to create visual effects for James Cameron’s film The Abyss even before version 1.0 was released.

More recently, in 2016, artificial intelligence was introduced into the program, with Sensei AI adding new features like Select Subject.

A statement from the company said to celebrate the landmark, it was adding new features both for its desktop and iPad versions - more Content-Aware Fill, lens blue, type and selections.

Details of the new features have been listed in a blog post published by the company.

Photoshop was written by Thomas and John Knoll in 1988; the first release was on 19 February 1999. The Knoll brothers sold the distribution licence to Adobe Systems which had been incorporated in 1988. Photoshop was first only available on the Macintosh.

It was ported to Windows in 1993 by Adobe chief architect Seetharaman Narayanan. There are versions in 26 languages and an iPad version was released in 2019.
