The suspect arrested in connection with the horrific murder of a four-member family in Wennappuwa has committed suicide by jumping into the Ma Oya, police said.

He had jumped off the bridge in the Thoppuwa area while assisting police officers to recover the weapon used by him to carry out the murders, Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said.

The suspect was arrested by officers of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in the Galkiriyagama area earlier today.

Police launched an investigation following the discovery of the bodies of four members of the same family which were recovered from a pit behind a coir factory in Nainamadama area in Wennappuwa on January 01.

The victims were identified as a dental surgeon attached to the Lunuwila hospital, her businessman husband, their 13-year-old son and 15-year-old daughter. They were reported missing since December 30, 2014.

The Police spokesman said that an individual who had served as a watcher at the coir factory, which is located behind the victims’ home, was arrested in connection with the murders.

During interrogation, the suspect has confessed to committing the murders with help from his illicit lover, he said, addressing a press conference today.
