The final rites of veteran Sri Lankan filmmaker Sumitra Peries, who passed away on Thursday (19 Jan.), were performed with full state honours on Saturday (Jan. 21). Prior to the funeral at the Independence Square in Colombo, her remains were brought from the late filmmaker’s sister’s residence to the National Film Corporation of Sri Lanka, where a large number of artists and cinematographers came to pay their respects. Sumitra Peries passed away at the age of 88 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Colombo. Being the first Sri Lankan female filmmaker, she contributed to the development of Sinhala cinema through “Gehenu Lamai”, “Ganga Addara”, “Yahaluvo”, “Maya”, “Sakman Maluwa”, “Vaishnavee” and many other cinematic creations.
