Two women were killed while a three-year-old child was injured after a van collided with a motorcycle today (04) near Katiyawa Junction on the Thalawa-Kekirawa road in the Eppawala police division.

The two women, aged 38 and 58, are residents of Malulewa in Galgamuwa and were traveling on the motorcycle along with the injured child at the time of the accident.

Police said that the child was admitted to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital for further treatment.

The accident occurred as the van driver allegedly fell asleep on the wheel causing the van to veer off the road and collided with the motorcycle coming from the opposite direction.

The van driver has been arrested by the police while he is reportedly Police Sergeant attached to the Anuradhapura Police Station.

Eppawala Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
