One injured in police fire after altercation at Minuwangoda checkpoint

A person has been injured and admitted to the Gampaha Hospital after police opened fire during an altercation when checking for narcotics at a road block in Minuwangoda today (01).

Meanwhile, another individual has been arrested following the incident, police said.

The incident had occurred when police officers from the Gampaha Divisional Crimes Bureau had ordered a motorcycle to stop at the police roadblock in Welhena, however, the motorcycle rider had continued without stopping.

Two of the police officers had then given chase and eventually managed to stop the motorcycle while it is reported that the two suspects had attempted to grab the service weapon of one of the police officers.

In response, the officers had opened fire injuring one of the suspects who was hit in the left leg and was later admitted to the Gampaha Hospital.

The injured suspect has been identified as Lahiru Dilantha, a 27-year-old resident of the Raja Singapura area in Minuwangoda.

The other arrested suspect, Tharindu Heshan, is a 21-year-old resident of Unapadurawatta, Uggalboda.

Police said that ‘Ice’ (Crystal Methamphetamine) and heroin were also found in the possession of the suspects.
