The Working Committee of the United National Party (UNP) has decided to lift all disciplinary orders and suspensions previously imposed on party members who had their membership suspended or faced disciplinary action for joining the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).

At a meeting held last evening (16), the UNP Working Committee also resolved to appoint a committee headed by former Attorney General and President’s Counsel Tilak Marapana to examine the legal background and implications that may arise during the implementation of the decision.

Speaking on the matter, UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena noted that this move removes the obstacles that previously hindered cooperation between the UNP and members who had joined the SJB, thereby paving the way for renewed collaboration.

The Working Committee meeting was held at the UNP headquarters in Sirikotha, under the leadership of party leader and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

During the meeting, a proposal to express gratitude to all parties who supported the formation of a common political front during the period when former President Ranil Wickremesinghe was taken into custody was also unanimously passed.
