PM Harini holds talk with Chinese President Xi Jinping

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, who is in Beijing for the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women, met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday.

The meeting was held at the Great Hall in Beijing.

Discussions between the two leaders focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, advancing development partnerships under the Belt and Road Initiative, and deepening collaboration across multiple sectors.

During the meeting, President Xi Jinping has stated that the traditional friendship between China and Sri Lanka has existed for a long time and that bilateral relations between the two countries have continuously developed based on the five principles of peaceful coexistence.

He further remarked that the relationship has become a model for friendly conduct and mutually beneficial cooperation between nations, and noted that China always prioritizes Sri Lanka in its diplomatic relations with neighboring countries.

President Xi also emphasized that China is ready to work together with Sri Lanka to strengthen the traditional friendship and cooperation, to build a shared future for the people of both countries, and to bring greater well-being to their citizens.

President Xi added that China aims to support Sri Lanka’s economic and social development, and that it is important to further strengthen cooperation in law enforcement, combating international cybercrime, and coordination and collaboration under multilateral frameworks, including the United Nations.

She expressed gratitude for China’s valuable assistance toward Sri Lanka’s economic and social development. The Prime Minister stated that Sri Lanka aims to achieve new development in the country by studying China’s modernization model and by expanding cooperation with China.

Furthermore, she emphasized that the four global initiatives proposed by President Xi at the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women are highly relevant to resolving the current uncertain global situation, and expressed confidence that Sri Lanka, together with China, will implement these initiatives and secure common success for the Global South.
