
Sri Lanka’s top shuttler Niluka Karunaratne defeated World Number 8 Japan’s Kenichi Tago 2-0 at Wembley Arena in the Olympic men’s badminton singles Group C at the 2012 London Games on Monday.
Niluka, World No 48, was the clear underdog going into the match however succeeded in beating Tago 21-18, 21-16 in 44 minutes.
Niluka Karunaratne, who has been on a world tour of badminton’s backblocks for 10 months, says: “This is the biggest win in the history of Sri Lanka badminton.”
Sri Lanka’s overall captain, Karunaratne has won the national men’s singles championship title on ten occasions since 2000.
