Sachin, Buwaneka win Australian Junior International

  Unseeded Sachin Dias and Buwaneka Goonathileka of Sri Lanka won the under-19 doubles event at the 2013 Australian Junior International Badminton Tournament in Ballarat.

The Sri Lankan pair powered their way to the men’s doubles final after defeating Australia’s Daniel Guda and Toby Wong in straight sets (21-13, 21-14) in their semi-final match yesterday.

Sachin from St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa and Buwaneka from Richmond College, Galle faced another Australian duo in the final today.

Players from Mexico, Indonesia, Philippines, New Zealand, Nauru and Australia also competed in the event held at the Ken Kay Badminton Stadium.

14 young shuttlers represented Sri Lanka at the event, which featured more than 150 players and support staff for men’s and women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

The Australian Junior International is a major event on the international under-19 badminton calendar, offering points for players striving to qualify for next year’s Youth Olympics.
