GA Chandrasiri reappointed as Governor of Northern Province

Major General (Retd) G.A. Chandrasiri has been reappointed as the Governor of the Northern Province. Chandrasiri was reappointed to the post by President Mahinda Rajapksa after his initial 5-year term (since 2009) came to an end today.

Maj. Gen Chandrasiri served in the Jaffna Peninsula on two occasions. He was the Divisional Commander, 52 Division, from 2002-2003 and later, from December 2005 to January 2009, functioned as the Security Forces Commander, Jaffna.

He was appointed as the Chief of Staff of Sri Lanka Army WEF on 01 March 2009 and retired from service on 12 July 2009 on the very same day he was appointed to the very prestigious and honorable appointment of Governor Northern Province.

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has opposed the reappointing of Chandrasiri and had called for a non-military persons to take up the role.
