Customs officers end work-to-rule campaign

Sri Lanka Customs offices have decided to call off their work-to-rule campaign with immediate effect, following assurance of a meeting with Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake.
The minister has agreed to a discussion on September 27 and therefore the trade union action was suspended, convenor of the Customs Trade Union Alliance Sudath Silva said.
The work-to-rule campaign was launched by the Customs Trade Union Alliance on Monday (19) demanding the withdrawal of the proposed new Customs Ordinance Draft Bill.
Eight trade unions including the Customs Executive Officers Union, Customs Superintendents Union, All Sri Lanka Customs Services Union and Customs Inspectors Union had joined hands to implement the trade union action.
The Unions also organised a protest opposite the Customs Headquarters in Colombo.
However, the Director General of Customs Chulananda Perera on Wednesday said customs officers who had retired between 2014 and 2016 have been recalled for service immediately for a period of one year on contract basis.
