Sri Lanka witnesses rare ‘Blood moon’…

September 8, 2025

Residents of Nuwara Eliya had the rare opportunity to witness a total lunar eclipse with the naked eye last night (September 7). Commonly referred to as a Blood Moon, this was the last total lunar eclipse of the year and was visible to nearly 85% of the global population. Unlike many eclipses that can only be observed from limited regions, this phenomenon was visible across much of Asia, Australia, Europe, and Africa, with Sri Lanka offering some of the clearest views. Stargazers and astronomy enthusiasts across the country were advised to prepare for the celestial spectacle, which illuminated the skies with a striking red hue.
